About the Book
Sihab ad-Din Ahmad bin ‘Abd al-Qader’s account of the early sixteenth century Jihad, or holywar, in Ethiopia, of Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim, better known as Ahmad Gran, or the Left handed, is an historical classic. The Yamani author was an eyewitness of several of the battles he describes, and is an invaluable source. His book, which is full of human, and at times tragic, drama, makes a major contribution to our knowledge of a crucially important period in the hisoty of Ethiopia and Horn of Africa.
‘Futuh al-Habasa,’ or ‘Conquest of Abyssinia’ – which undoubtedly reflects the situation as it seemed to its Yamani author at the time of its composition. The forces of Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim had occupied the greater part of Ethiopia. The resistance of Emperor Lebna Dengel had virtually come to an end, and many Christians had chosen to convert to Islam. The victorious Imam’s regime seemed there to stay.
This was, however, far from the end of the story. The Imam was killed in battle on February 21, 1543, whereupon his army almost immediately disintegrated. Those of his soldiers who could do so made their way back to the East. Not a few Muslim converts reverted to their former faith.
The Futuh thus refers to a relatively short, though crucially important, period in Ethiopia’s long history. The book is nevertheless valuable, in that its author was an eye-witness of many of the events he describes, and writes, as far as we can judge, with a degree of objectivity rare for his time.

I researched Adal, the Islamic kigndom that existed between Eritrea all the way to Coastal City Berber.
I thought Adal was mostly Afar and Arab kingdom, but I’m suprised Somalis have connection to Adal.
When and where Adal Empire was born:
*It was on the 13th century that came to the light, in Horn of Africa, one of the strongest Empire that existed in East Africa. Adal Empire had its origine in the city of Zeyla, situated until today in the northern region of the former Democratic Republic of Somalia. The father of that State was King Omar D. Ahmed (nicknamed Aw-Barkhadle). The king who had a long live, occupied the throne for many years. When he passed away, he left behind him many children, mainly males. Among them, the successors to the throne who inherited the kingdom. Later, Adal Empire became an Islamic Empire that expanded the religion of Islam with determination, into the entire Horn of Africa. Remarked by its faithful actions, other Islamic States in the world called Adal Empire “Diraasal-Islaam”.
During the centuries that followed, Adal Empire was engaged into many wars against the Abysinians (Habasha), where thousands and thousands individuals died. At that time, Adal Empire became the most loved Islamic State among the entire Islamic Nations because of its determination to its cause; its strong judicial system and its faithful expansion of Islam into the territories of Abyssinians and Galas (Oromos). At that period of time, Adal Empire had a strong alliance with the Ottoman Empire of Turkey, while the Portuguese supported the Abyssinians.

Saying that, to the North, Adal Empire was situated up to the region of Danaakil (actually, North of the Republic of Djibouti, populated by Afar people). While to the South, the empire had its border up to the region of Ras-Xaafuun (actually called Hays and Maydh, located in today’s Region of Sanaac). From the East, Adal Empire as well as the actual State of Awdal, had the entire code facing the Red Sea while to the West, it was situated up to the Region of Shawa (in Ethiopia), also called Shawa at that time. In fact, Shawa was the base of the Kingdom of Abyssinia and today, it’s the home of its descendents leaded by the Ethiopian government, with its capital city of Addis-Ababa.
Composition of Adal Empire:
Adal Empire was composed of seven (7) States. According to the size of their land and the military forces of each state, here is their names: Ifaad, Dawaaro, Araabiini, Hadaya, Sharqa, Baali and Daara, where each of them had its own government. Please refer to the map titled Map of Adal Empire (13th century). The largest and strongest State Ifaad, known from Egypt and “Shaam” as Zeyla’s land, became later the dominant and the central one with its capital city of Zeyla. Ifaad will lead the entire Empire and will face many challenges. According to the historians of that period, Ifaad was large as 20 days of walk from North to South and 15 days of walk from East to West. Its military force was composed of 15000 cavaliers and 20000 of infantries.
In his book titled “Masaalikal-Absaar”(this is in Somali spelling), the Egyptian author, Subhul Ahsha mentioned that Zeyla was the nucleus city of Adal Empire. Continuing into the description of this city, he added that Zeyla was “The City of Light”, which had many Mosques and many schools, where all kind of subjects were taught. In fact, Mr. Ahsha described Zeylac as “The Place” where one can acquire any kind of knowledge that may be taught in that period of time. The author added in his description that the people were 100% Muslim. Mr. Ahsha said that they were gathering in large number into the Mosques of the city, as faithful believers to Islam. According to this writing, these Mosques could be compared to the municipal libraries that can be found today in big cities of our century. In addition of that, schools were places where people use to enjoy meeting, share knowledge, discuss about social issues and debate intellectually. As a matter of fact, Zeyla was known as the place where the knowledge was at the merci of everyone.

Who were the people living under the ruling of that great Empire, well known by its strong judicial system? The Adal of yesterday is the Awdal of today:
First of all, though the Empire that we mention all along was called Adal Empire, in their mother language (Somali), the people of that nation called “Cadal”. Translating the word Cadal into Latin gave Adal. With the time, people changed the word Adal (Cadal) to Awdal and that is how the Awdal of today is referred to the Adal Empire of yesterday.
The State of Awdal borders with Djibouti from the North-West, Ethiopia from the West, the former Democratic Republic of Somalia from the South and, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea from the North-East through the entire Easter coastal region. The region has an estimated land area of 22,000 sq. km and a 170 km long coastline on the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. Awdal experiences three distinct climatic seasons; the rainy season which starts in March and ends in July, the dry season which starts in August and lasts until November and a kind of Mediterranean Fall, from December to February. High temperatures of above 35C and 20C are observed along the coastal settlements during the summer and winter months respectively. Average annually rainfall is between 450-500 mm. the State of Awdal consists of four districts: Boroma – with Boroma City as the regional capital city, Zeila, Lughaya and Baki.
As mentioned above, the State of Awdal corresponds to the former Adal Empire, which became Gadabursi Land under the British colonial, in the 19th century. Later, it was called Awdal Region until the disintegration of the dictatorial regime of the former Democratic Republic of Somali, in 1991. the State of Awdal did not officially proclaim yet its status to the rest of the world and it’s not recognized yet as an Independent Nation by the United Nations but so far, the Awdalites live in their homeland under the ruling of local authorities, with freedom. After the collapse of the Somali government in 1991, Awdalites continued to maintain a stable existence, despite the economic infrastructure left behind by British and humanitarian organizations assistance programs. The State of Awdal is one of the African’s largest source of incense and myrrh, which are forestry products. Also, the Awdal’s chief exports include livestock, fish, hides and skins and, petroleum products. Nowadays, as one of the most recently established nation, the State of Awdal presents a new field of study for scholars and investors.
Ahmad Guray was a Dir Somali (his mother was a Harari Ethiopian though…) The Dir are the northernmost of the 6 Somali Clans, They include the Gadabursi of Northwest Somaliland and the Iessa of Djibouti.
The capital of Adal Sultanate was Harrar (which was an Islamic center) and its major ports were Zeila and Sahil (now Berbera) Ahmad the Left-handed’s army included alot of recently Islamisized Somalis from the east (like the Ogaden, and Majerteen) and also a lot of Oromo and it also covered almost all of the Afar regions. It was truly the first and only 100% Cushitic Empire.
And man, did he give the Abbysinians a run for their money! He conquered lands as deep into the Ethiopian interior as Lake Tana (the source of the blue Nile) and he was killed in battle there. Only for his wife to carry on the first Jihad in the Horn of Africa.
He was also the first non European to use cannons and muskets in his warfare

1. (C) Summary A TFG-backed Juba offensive, aimed at pushing
al-Shabaab out of Kismayo, appears to be moving forward, but
competing Ethiopian and/or Marehan clan interests could
complicate matters. TFG Minister of Defense "Gandi" reports
that the TFG is in contact with local players in Juba,
including Ras Kamboni leaders Ahmed Madobe and Ibrahim
Shukri, in an effort to reconcile differences and obtain
their cooperation. "Gandi" said President Sharif fully
supports the plan, which remains closely held within the TFG.
The force in Lower Juba will consist of Darod/Kabalah clan
militia but will not include Darod/Marehan militia from the
Gedo region. Madobe appears willing to cooperate with the TFG
if Lower Juba's autonomy would be assured. "Gandi" told us
that the TFG is in negotiations with the Government of Kenya
over support for the plan. Several of our Lower Juba contacts
tell us they think some Marehan leaders are attempting to
confuse the Kenyans by telling them that the Marehan have
agreed to cooperate with those in Lower Juba in order to take

involvement in an evolving Darod/Kabalah/Obsame plan to take
Kismayo and consolidate control of Lower Juba (refs a,b).
"Gandi" said the TFG in March began to talk to local players

Madobe's Version of Events Reveals
Ogaden-Centric Agenda

close contact and kinsman of Ahmed Madobe, who had just
returned from spending several days with Madobe in the Lower
Juba town of Dhobley. Raghe relayed to Poloff Madobe's
version of recent events. Approximately six months before
Madobe's late-March return to Lower Juba, Ras Kamboni leader
Hassan al-Turki orchestrated a power-sharing arrangement for
the Kismayo port between al-Shabaab and Ras Kamboni/Hisbul
Islam. (Note: Madobe was Governor of Kismayo under the
Council of Islamic Courts CIC) and was captured and
imprisoned by Ethiopian forces when the CIC fled Kismayo in
2006. He was released from jail after President Sharif
interceded on his behalf during his maiden visit to Addis
Ababa. Madobe was appointed an MP in Somalia's expanded
Parliament in January 2009. He resigned as MP in April 2009
and remained in Lower Juba. End note.) Turki had placed
non-Ogaden al-Shabaab in primary leadership positions in
Kismayo, forcing Ogaden-clan Ras Kamboni leaders into deputy
positions. This suggested to Madobe that Turki's primary

allegiance was to al-Shabaab. The Kismayo port agreement
called for revenues to be divided, with 30% going to
al-Shabaab, 30% to a joint Ras Kamboni/al-Shabaab
administration, 30% to Ras Kamboni, and 10% to the Anole
group. (Note: The Anole group is a faction of Hisbul Islam
comprised of Darod/Kabalah/Harti militia. End Note.) Ras
Kamboni in the end, however, received only about 2% of the
revenues over the following months and, as a result, Ogaden
clansmen defected to al-Shabaab.
4. (C) When Madobe returned to Lower Juba in late-March he
was welcomed by Ogaden clan leaders. At that time,
al-Shabaab began a campaign to persuade Turki that Madobe
could not be trusted. Al-Shabaab urged Turki not to let
Madobe join the Ras Kamboni leadership for three months,
arguing that he may have been influenced by Ethiopia while in
captivity. For their part, Ogaden clan elders told Madobe he
must put clan interests before relations with al-Shabaab.
Madobe subsequently traveled to Kismayo to begin to mobilize
support among the subclans. In order to counter al-Shabaab's
accusations against him as he worked to mobilize Ogaden
support, Madobe resigned from the TFG. When al-Shabaab in
Kismayo began to take the "converted" Ras Kamboni militia to
Mogadishu to participate in the May offensive, Madobe's
Ogaden clan complained that al-Shabaab was using Ogaden
militia to ensure safe passage to Mogadishu, then was
abandoning them once there. Madobe believed their grievances
presented a good opportunity to convince his former militia
in Mogadishu to return to Lower Juba for an attack on
Kismayo. Madobe claimed that as many as 80% of his supporters
have returned to Lower Juba from Mogadishu. After a one month
meeting in Afmadow, Ras Kamboni restructured and appointed
Madobe its head and Shukri as head of internal affairs.
Madobe, Shukri and their allied militias claim to control
Afmadow (including Dhobley), Badadee, and west Jilib, and are
now in a position to defeat al-Shabaab in Kismayo, Jimaame,
and east Jilib.
5. (C) Madobe reportedly wants to push al-Shabaab out and win
leadership of an autonomous Lower Juba linked to the TFG.
According to Raghe, Madobe said he does not think the TFG
understands Madobe's decision to go to Mogadishu, even though
Madobe assured "Gandi" he did not go to Mogadishu to fight
the TFG. Raghe told us Madobe would accept a minister
position within the TFG, but would demand control of a
semi-autonomous Jubaland administration if he stayed in the
region after delivering Kismayo. Madobe said he does not want
to publicly announce his intention to join or support the
government too soon because it would give al-Shabaab
propaganda material, but told Raghe that Darod/Kabalah clan
militia will support his plan to do so once the port is taken
and the clan imperative met.
Evolving Jubaland Administration
Retains Cautious View Of Madobe

working toward a would-be Jubaland administration met with
PolOff and added nuance to earlier statements about their
relationship with Madobe (refs a,b). They said their goal is
a regional administration, linked to the TFG. They were
willing to have Madobe at its head if he was successful in
taking Kismayo. (Note: In earlier comments the same contacts
indicated to us that Madobe had already been appointed leader
of the evolving Jubaland Administration. End note.) The
Darod/Kabalah leaders said the day Madobe captures Kismayo he
will have to announce that he is part of and/or supports the
TFG or he will loose clan support. Ogaden leaders reportedly
believe that Ogaden-led control of Kismayo will translate
into greater Ogaden representation in the TFG at the
ministerial level and that political negotiations regarding a
greater Jubaland to include Gedo should for now remain
unaddressed.
Growing Concern Over Ethiopian-Backed

ammunition and support to Barre Hirale's troops. He said he
views recent meetings in Nairobi between General Morgan,
Barre Hirale, Ali Gedi and others as dangerous. "Gandi" urged
us to explain to Ethiopia that the TFG, like Ethiopia, wishes
to counter and defeat al-Shabaab. "Gandi" worried that
Ethiopian meddling could undercut the Kismayo offensive.

have in common with Madobe's initiative an understanding that
any push into Kismayo should be predominantly Ogaden-led.

a Juba offensive (ref c). The Kenyan plan, however, contains
the added element of an Ethiopian-backed Ahlu Sunnah Wal

The executive committee of the Wagosha Movement of Somalia, has strongly criticized the ongoing meeting on Kenyan soil trying to solidify the ill-advised establishment of the so called "Azania State" in Somalia.
The movement said it was unfortunate to see Kenya being used by individuals with clan interests and characterized it as a move that can undermine the stability in the Jubba regions of Southern Somalia and the whole continental region around the Horn of Africa.
The Chairman of the Wagosha Movement of Somalia, Eng Yarow Sharef Aden said Kenya was supposed to play a regional role in resolving the Somalia crisis, but instead some Ogaden clan individuals have been given a go ahead to create more trouble in Somalia.
The Executive Committee of Wagosha said Kenyan nationals like Abdirahman Olow, Mohamed Yusuf Haji, Farah Moalim, Ilyas Barre Shil, Nuradin Mohamed Yusuf Haji and others, who all hail from the same clan of the Ogaden become the ears, eyes and strong-arms of the Kenyan nation concerning the Jubbaland issues. Their only aim they are campaigning for, is to create an Ogaden entity in Jubbaland and cleanse the people from all other clans including the majority Bantu people of Wagosha and use this Somali region for their own selfish gains.
The people from the Ogaden clan and their region to the west of today's Somalia invaded the southern Jubbaland only after the second world war and could hold some positions with the help of the former government of strongman Siad Barre. "They lost their own homeland in the Ogaden to the Abyssinian government and do not want to go back despite having their own regional state there, and now they want to conquer our lands instead," explained Col. Mkomwa, the deputy chairman of the Wagosha Movement.
“We have been telling the world for a long time that the Ogaden clan in the North-Eastern Province of Kenya is harbouring Al-Shabab members. We revealed that senior members of Al-Shabab in Jubbaland and other parts in Somalia are from Garissa in Kenya. Today the UN monitoring group in its report has confirmed our claims”, added Eng Yarow Sharef Aden, who accused the Ogaden clan politicians of hiding the truth about how the districts they claim are used by Al-Shabab members.
Eng Yarow said Jubbaland will be the Soweto and Niger Delta of the Horn of Africa, if Mohamed Abdi Gandi, a French passport holder, does not stop his sick idea of conquering the land of the Wagosha people. Already the choice of the name " AZANIA " for his dreamed up, personal thiefdom shows the confusion of mind and the Wagosha people urge especially the French to withdraw their funding from this neo-colonial initiative.
Neither the South African Socialist Party of Azania (SOPA) under their leader Lybon Masaba , nor the Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPO) of South Africa or the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), based in South Africa have anything to do with the ill-fated initiative of a single Somali man - pushed by his clan, foreign money and the political opponents of a united and strong Somalia.
This imperialist move by Mr. Mohamed Abdi, who was with French backing and funds for a short while defence minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia until he got sacked, is spearheaded by the Ogaden, seconded by Ethiopia and Kenya and bankrolled by French governmental and oil interests.
The Wagosha Movement has reiterated its decision of opposing any outcome from the so called "Azania" meeting in Kenya, adding that the movement will fight against the Ogaden invaders from Ethiopia, called Zone Five, and those from North East Province of Kenya or from the Puntland region of Somalia.
The Wagosha people call on the international community to take part in resolving the Somalia crisis and end the slavery of the Somali nationals of Bantu origin and the apartheid regime oppressing all Somali minorities in the Jubba regions and other parts of the country

Eng Yarow said Jubbaland will be the Soweto and Niger Delta of the Horn of Africa, if Mohamed Abdi Gandi, a French passport holder, does not stop his sick idea of conquering the land of the Wagosha people. Already the choice of the name " AZANIA " for his dreamed up, personal thiefdom shows the confusion of mind and the Wagosha people urge especially the French to withdraw their funding from this neo-colonial initiative.
Neither the South African Socialist Party of Azania (SOPA) under their leader Lybon Masaba , nor the Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPO) of South Africa or the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), based in South Africa have anything to do with the ill-fated initiative of a single Somali man - pushed by his clan, foreign money and the political opponents of a united and strong Somalia.
This imperialist move by Mr. Mohamed Abdi, who was with French backing and funds for a short while defence minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia until he got sacked, is spearheaded by the Ogaden, seconded by Ethiopia and Kenya and bankrolled by French governmental and oil interests.
The Wagosha Movement has reiterated its decision of opposing any outcome from the so called "Azania" meeting in Kenya, adding that the movement will fight against the Ogaden invaders from Ethiopia, called Zone Five, and those from North East Province of Kenya or from the Puntland region of Somalia.
The Wagosha people call on the international community to take part in resolving the Somalia crisis and end the slavery of the Somali nationals of Bantu origin and the apartheid regime oppressing all Somali minorities in the Jubba regions and other parts of the country

In the Bari and Mudug regions of Somalia and all the way to Hiiraan region is another cluster of Dir clans known as the Surre Qubeys or Abdallahs. The Suure have been associated with spreading the Islamic faith in Somalia and the Qadiriya Sufi tariiqa in southern Somalia. They left the Lafaruug area of Awdal where their founder was killed during the clashes with the Ethiopians and they were the defeated. That last defeat forced the Biyomaal to flee to the Lower Shabeele region while the Qubeys and Abdalle's fled to Mudug and Bari. The Suure are among the most influential Dir groups in Southern Somalia, and their territories include large areas of the Mudug and Galguduud regions. Also the Suure have founded major trade cities in the Hiiran area including Alaabay and Kamhanley.
The majority of western scholars (both Italian and British) simply referred to the Surre as the "Dir of central Somalia" without differentiating them, but recent studies in Somalia reveal that the majority of the Dir in Hiiran, Gedo, Jubba and Bakool are divided into two branches, the Qubeyes and Abdalles, both descendants of Surre.

Surre sub-clan is local to mostly Puntland state districts such as Mudug (Galkaiyo, Jariiban, and Hobyo) in particular Towfiiq, Ceeldhanaan and Cowle of the Golol Valley which is dominated by the Reer Agoon and Dabac segments; Nugal (Eyl); Bari (Qardo, Bosaso, Qandala, Alulo); and Sanaag (Laasqoray), the Laasqoray Surre clan called locally Reer Cabaas or Urdudub and live side by side with Warsangeli. In Galgudug, the Surre sub-clan of Cabdale occupies territory extending 180 km from approx 20 km of Abuqwaq to Balanbale parallel to the Ethio-Somalia boundary. The centre of the Surre in Galgadud in the district of Xeraale which is located between Dhusamared and Abudwaq (The heartland of the Dariqa sects Ahlu-Sunna Wal Jameeca).
Southward, the Surre is also an integral part of the Hiiran region communities. The base of the Surre is the commercial and farmland villages of Kabhanley and Defow. Perhaps the most important region for the Surre remains Luq district of Gedo. The border town of Boholgaras to the limits of the river Jubba banks of Luq is dominated by Surre dir sub-clans of mainly Fuqu-Muhumed sub sub-clan. In the Jubba regions, Jamame is an important homeland of the Surre accompying their Bimal brethren whom are vastly dominant in that area. The farmland town of Bender-Jadid is solely domiciled by the Surre.
